Campground description

Mālaekahana Beach Campground, privately operated in partnership with the state, offers approximately 40 primitive RV and tent sites across wooded and grassy sections just steps from an ocean beach. Sites are unpaved and set amid ironwood and seaside flora, providing natural ambiance without hookups. Each site features a picnic table and fire ring; bathrooms and hot showers are available in a shared bathhouse. Water is available at central taps, and trash/recycling stations are provided. Though labeled “RV sites,” space and terrain generally require smaller rigs or campervans. Big rigs may have difficulty. There’s no sewer dump station or electrical hookups, so this is dry camping. The campground offers shore swimming, bodysurfing, fishing, and nearby kayak/canoe rentals. The vibe is rustic and laid‑back. Rates of approximately $12 per site per night (~$30 non‑resident permit) are budget‑friendly, but there are no long‑term discounts. Pets are not allowed. Reservations operate by permit only; camping is available Friday through Wednesday (closed mid‑week). A construction/renovation project between 2023–2025 has affected access—confirm current status before planning. Despite that, Mālaekahana remains one of the few private‑run camping experiences that cater to RV/tent travelers in Oʻahu with basic facilities in a coastal setting.

We have camped at Malaekahana almost every year since 2006

We have camped at Malaekahana almost every year since 2006. It is always an enjoyable experience, as the campground is well maintained and safe. The latest addition is a slightly grouchy security guard who walks around making sure the campers are being orderly. Highlights include the awesome beach, newly refurbished mini cabins, and the notably decreased chicken population (there used to be way too many chickens!). In the past 17 years of camping here we have never had any problems, and look forward to returning next summer.

This place is my dream campground! I had the most magical time there. I hope to come back with my future kids. Incredible scenery and setup! Jungle/beach life. Super chill vibe. Beautiful cocks all over campgrounds. Sunrise is a spectacle there, and the water is so warm. A few suggestions: I would make sure all the halls have a lockbox, providing a padlock and key. Also, I would offer at the campground store sheets, inflatable pillows, beach towels, sleeping bags, and the option to purchase them prior to arrival to find them in the Hale/Suite upon late arrival.

2023.09: had a lucky last camping weekend here before the almost one year full renovation of the camp structures and utilities. Beautiful location close to the beach and the area was kept tidy and clean. Downside was the amenities (no lights in toilets and open showers without any privacy). It was also difficult to sleep with the chickens and roosters being everywhere making noise throughout the night…

This was our second time camping here, and truly loved the experience. Had a wonderful camp site directly on the beach with both moonrise and sunrise directly in front of us over the ocean. Will definitely be returning to this spot again. We stayed Sunday night and it was so peaceful the next day with hardly anyone on the beach. Walked the coastline for about a mile in the morning.

Super cute campground with a ton of space available for camping. Each site has a picnic table associated with the site number you reserved. I didn’t see any fire pits, so if you want to have a fire, bring your own pit/grill. Some sites are in a bit of a gulch-like area, and I could see it flooding on those sites if it rained too hard. There are sinks with running water throughout the campground and two main bathrooms. You’ll need a reservation at the campground for camping overnight, and the gates close around 7pm. The beach can be accessed all day without any reservation needed.
