Just 11 miles from Vernonia in Oregon’s Coast Range, L. L. “Stub” Stewart Memorial State Park is the only full-service state park near Portland. The park features 78 full utility RV campsites with water, sewer, and electricity, as well as 23 primitive hike-in sites and 15 rentable cabins. Dormant 20/30/50 amp hook-ups, picnic tables, fire rings, and tent-friendly spaces accommodate a wide range of campers. Connectivity is limited, but this low-light area is perfect for stargazing – OMSI hosts astronomy and night sky events regularly. Facilities include flush toilets, hot showers, a dump station, drinking water, trash/recycling, and a unique horse camp with corrals. Outdoor adventures abound: over 15 miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, beginner-friendly disc golf, and campground playgrounds. Reservations are required, and the park is open all year. Standard nightly rates align with Oregon State Park pricing (~$26/night). The park does not offer long-term discounts, staying true to state standards. With its great proximity to Portland, wide activity options, and natural forest setting, Stub Stewart is an excellent site for families, adventurers, and those seeking rich recreation and night-sky viewing.
